Raksha Bandhan

Happy Festival Time

The festivals season has began :).  It's the time of the year to celebrate[pl don't ask do we not celebrate at other times :( ] .

So here i start up my celebration with writing small write-up about each festival with the information i know and i can collect. Also kindly requesting the reader to add their share of info about the festivals and different types of celebration in the comments section so that all can know and enjoy.
So i start up with the recent festival that went by - Raksha Bandhan
This is one of the festival that is celebrated all over India acknowledging the Bond of love between the Brothers and Sisters.Raksha Bandhan which means 'the bond of protection' . It is celebrated on the Full Moon day of the month of Shraavana [The same day when we all celebrate Avani Avittam].The festival is marked by the tying of a rakhi, or holy thread by the sister on the wrist of her brother. The brother in return offers a gift to his sister and vows to look after her.It is not necessary that the rakhi can be given only to a brother by birth; any male can be "adopted" as a brother by tying a rakhi on the person, that is "bond brothers and sisters", whether they are cousins or a good friend.
Some History about this festival:
  • Draupadi and Krishna during the Rajsuya yagya - After Shishupal's death, Krishna was left with a bleeding finger. Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, had torn a strip of silk off her sari and tied it around Krishna's wrist to stop the flow of blood. Touched by her concern, Krishna had declared himself bound to her by her love. He further promised to repay the debt many fold. Many years later when Draupadi was about to be shamed by being disrobed in front of the whole court by her evil brother-in-law Duryodhana, she called on Krishna to help her, and he did by divinely elongating her sari so it could not be removed.
  • In 16th century, Rani Karnavati of Chittor sent a rakhi to the Mughal Emperor Humayun when she was threatened by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. Humayun abandoned an ongoing military campaign to ride to her rescue.
In the years, many people have asked that only by tying a rakhi, should the sister show her love or only by returning a gifts should a brother show his love ? Does other wise the love not exists ? It's not like that. This is the way in which the love is expressed. That is the simple answer that can be sought of. Unlike any other relationship, this is the bond of love that we all have shared since our childhood and cherish lot of memories. So why not celebrate/express it :). Rakhi has strengthen the bond of love between brothers and sisters.
Finally few Quotations for this beautiful festivel

Children of the same family, the same blood, with the same first associations and habits, have some means of enjoyment in their power, which no subsequent connections can supply.

Jane Austen, Mansfield Park

I, who have no sisters or brothers, look with some degree of innocent envy on those who may be said to be born to friends.

James Boswell

Brothers and sisters are as close as hands and feet.

Vietnamese Proverb

Our brothers and sisters are there with us from the dawn of our personal stories to the inevitable dusk.

Susan Scarf Merrell

I think people that have a brother or sister don't realize how lucky they are. Sure, they fight a lot, but to know that there's always somebody there, somebody that's family.

Trey Parker & Matt Stone

Having a sister is like having a best friend you can't get rid of. You know whatever you do, they'll still be there.
